- Abstract
In 2025, the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) will mark its 20th anniversary since over 170 world leaders committed to protecting populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity. Over the past two decades, R2P has been tested by numerous conflicts and humanitarian crises. The doctrine has faced significant challenges and criticisms, particularly after its controversial application in Libya, which is often seen as a watershed moment for its perceived loss of relevance. However, reflecting on other situations where R2P was invoked, it has also demonstrated success in preventing further violence in contexts such as Kenya and Côte d'Ivoire. Despite its limitations, we cannot abandon the Responsibility to Protect. Instead, we should enhance its implementation by addressing criticisms, learning from the past, and leveraging its array of tools beyond military intervention under its three pillars. Especially now, with egregious atrocities occurring in places like Gaza, the international community must act to fulfil its promise of safeguarding humanity from the gravest crimes.
