- Abstract
Nanocellulose is a renewable organic one-dimensional nanomaterial, which has favorable multifunctional characters, such as tunable surface chemistry, high mechanical property, hydrophilicity, and biodegradability. More recently, nanocellulose-based composites receive more attention due to their unique properties and widely applications. Herein, we purpose to review the current development of synthetic routes, major properties, and important applications of nanocellulose-based composites for potential environmental application. The synthesis of nanocellulose-based composites, aerogels, hydrogels, and films are introduced. The potential environmental applications of nanocellulose-based composites are highlighted with some examples, e.g. gases purification, contaminants removal, heavy-metal ions removal, etc. Finally, based on the authors' knowledge, the existing problem and future development directions of these promising nanocellulose-based composites are also suggested. It expects that multifunctional nanocellulose-based composites have potential environmental applications.
