- Abstract
The article discusses seventeenth-century British woman author and poet Lady Hester Pulter, notable for her manuscript written between 1655 and 1665 held at the Brotherton Library at Leeds University. A manuscript entitled "The Declaracion of Ley, or Ley: His Pedigree" at the Wiltshire and Swindon Record Office, reveals that Hester, daughter of Sir James Ley (1550–1629), earl of Marlborough, and his wife Mary Pettie or Petty, was born in Ireland on June 18, 1605. She married Arthur Pulter, a gentleman at Broadfield Hall near Cottered, Hertfordshire when she was around thirteen years old, had fifteen children, and she died in 1678. The author compares biographical details found in Pulter's writings with those found in history sources.
