- Title
THE WRONG PLACE, THE WRONG TIME: WHY YEMENI UNITY FAILED.
- Authors
Dunn, Michael Collins
- Abstract
The article discusses the reasons why Yemenis failed to unite for civil war in Yemen. The key mistakes of the collapse of the Yemeni unity include the underestimation of differences between north and south divisions of the nation, rejection of a federal system, rush to unity, retention of the old leadership, unworkable coalition, failure to unite the armies, failure of leadership, underestimation of outside forces and conflict in oil production. It is concluded that the Yemeni unity was an experiment conducted not in a promise laboratory of democratization but in the real Arabian Peninsula of the early 1990s.
