- Abstract
On 1 April 2009, the Government of Nunavut celebrated its 10th anniversary. The birth of Nunavut was the result of more than 20 years of negotiations between the federal government and Inuit of the Canadian Eastern Arctic. One of the objectives attached to the creation of Nunavut was to give to Inuit the opportunity to control their political agenda so as to tackle the socio-economic challenges faced by Inuit society at the dawn of the 21st century. After 10 years of existence, however, the socio-economic conditions in Nunavut remain bleak. Still, there are some signs that the situation will improve in the future: Nunavut benefits from the highest economic annual growth in Canada, it is currently implementing an Inuit-based school curriculum reform, it is building additional social housing units, it has recently passed a language law that will reinforce the use of the Inuit language throughout Nunavut. All of these initiatives may lead to better socioeconomic conditions in the longer term. Nunavut is still a young jurisdiction that will have to continue to grow through some painful socio-economic realities.
