Response to patients who inquire about the safety of dental amalgam.
- Authors
Anusavice, Kenneth J.; Mjör, Ivar A.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the safety of dental amalgam restorations for patients. It states that the dental amalgam consists of silver, copper, tin and mercury, and amalgam restorations have demonstrated durability over long periods of time with minimal side effects. It mentions that no correlation has been established between any adverse symptoms of chronic mercury exposure and the presence of amalgam restorations, and allergic reactions have been experienced only by a small number of patients. It also mentions that although a minute amount of mercury vapor is released from dental amalgam during placement and chewing, the release of vapor is increased during the removal of these restorations.
