- Title
Red cell transfusion and clinical outcomes in acute pulmonary embolism: Harmful therapy or an indicator of sicker patients with poor prognosis?
- Authors
Chunilal, Sanjeev D.; Wood, Erica M.
- Abstract
The article discusses how transfusion of red blood cells (RBC) restores tissue oxygenation and can be life-saving. It notes that the group receiving RBC had lower mean haemoglobin (Hb) concentrations at admission. It adds that all RBC provided by the Australian Red Cross Blood Service are leucodepleted, with very low numbers of residual white cells.
