- Abstract
A study published in the journal Diabetes, Obesity & Metabolism examined the effectiveness of liraglutide 3mg once daily (o.d.) for weight loss in patients with overweight or obesity. The study found that despite losing an average of 11.1% of body weight after 10 months of treatment, a significant number of patients did not achieve the weight loss target set by the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health. The study suggested that practical limitations and variations in the provision of weight-loss services, as well as issues of patient access and compliance, may have contributed to the disappointing outcomes. The authors proposed that digital weight-loss services (DWLSs) could be a solution to improve multidisciplinary support for patients trying to lose weight. They analyzed a dataset of patients who participated in an asynchronous DWLS and found that after 32 weeks of treatment, the mean weight loss was 11.6%, with 88.8% of patients losing more than 5% of their initial body weight. The study concluded that DWLSs have the potential to overcome practical limitations and provide high-quality individualized care for patients seeking weight loss.
