- Abstract
The human lymphotropic virus type I and II (HTLV I/II) are retroviruses associated to different pathologies. HTLV I causes leukemia/lymphoma adult T-cell (LTA) and tropical spastic paraparesis (PET). HTLV II has been associated with neurological conditions similar to those induced by the type I. Objective: To determine the seroprevalence of antibodies to HTLV I/II in blood donors of Centro Médico Dr. Rafael Guerra Méndez, Valencia, Venezuela. Methodology: We included all 13,414 samples from blood donors received between June 2005 and April 2011. Samples were serologically assayed by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the identification of anti-HTLV I/II IgG; positive samples were further reassayed by confirmatory Western Blot (WB) and nucleic acid amplification chain reaction (PCR). Results: This study included 13.414 blood donors gathered during seven years work; 10.303 were male (76.80%) and 3,111 female (23.20%) whose ages ranged between 22 and 52 years old. Only 5 male resulted positive for the test, representing a prevalence of 0.04%. Conclusions: Positive HTLV 1/11 collected blood was discarded. We observed a low seroprevalence of HTLV I/II. It is important the detection of antibodies against HTLV I/II in all blood banks in the country and blood-donors should be routinely screened to minimise transmission of HTLV I/II infection.
