- Title
THE DRAFT.
- Abstract
The article reports on the announcement by U.S. President Richard M. Nixon wherein he signed an Executive Order that requires 19-year-old and older men whose deferment has expired be called first by the Selective Service System. The House Armed Service Committee's special subcommittee held a hearing on the Nixon's request to cancel officially one sentence in the 1967 draft law and permit the institution of random selection of inductees. The subcommittee was not convinced that the plan of the President would provide greater equity in the selection process over the present oldest-first system. The House Armed Service Committee did not consider the elimination of draft deferments for college students.
