- Abstract
The article discusses the legacy of racial bias, segregation, and discrimination that persisted for many years at state and local medical societies. The article seeks to encourage a dialog within the medical community about how to heal and unify the profession of medicine. Key episodes that demonstrate the American Medical Association's efforts to challenge practices and policies that maintained medical segregation and bias against black physicians are examined. The way in which exclusion continues to affect African American physicians and their patients is described.
