- Title
Timing of Umbilical Cord Clamping at Birth in Full-term Infants.
- Authors
Oh, William
- Abstract
The article presents an editorial on the timing of clamping of the umbilical cord in newborns. The author believes that while there are apparent benefits to waiting at least two minutes before clamping (prevention of anemia), there is also a potential for adverse effects. These effects include an increased risk for hyperbilirubinemia, polycythemia, and hyperviscosity because of the increase in neonatal blood volume if the umbilical cord is not clamped for two to three minutes. The author states that while the practice of delaying clamping an umbilical cord for at least two minutes in a newborn may be beneficial, randomized controlled trials of adequate size should be initiated to more fully weigh the potential benefits and adverse effects.
