- Abstract
This article reports on a study done to assess the risk of subsequent fracture following a prior fracture. The study concluded that the risk of subsequent fracture increased at identical rates for men and women, aged 60 years and older, and persisted for ten years. Some indicators of fracture risk were mineral density, age, smoking and calcium intake. The study examined what part of the body was fractured initially and how that influenced the risk of future fractures. Almost half of subsequent fractures occurred within the first two years after the initial fracture.
