JUAN DE LANUZA DEL DUQUE DE RIVAS: ¿PRIMER HÉROE ROMÁNTICO DE LA NUEVA NACIÓN ESPAÑOLA?
- Authors
Blackshaw, Christine
- Abstract
The essay analyzes Juan de Lanuza from the Duke of Rivas as a true prototype of the Spanish romantic hero. The play Lanuza, premiered in 1822, criticizes the Ferdinand regime and calls on Spaniards to revolt against their oppressors. Although he commits suicide at the end of the play, Lanuza is considered more rebellious than Don Álvaro himself. The essay examines the relationship between father and son in Lanuza and argues that it is similar to the Oedipal representations in other Spanish romantic dramas.
