- Abstract
This article addresses the risk of addiction to prescribed medications. There has been an increase in the number of Americans who abused controlled prescription drugs from 1992 to 2003. Patient empowerment through choice can help minimize the use of potentially addictive drugs, according to a study. The risk factors for addiction to medication are discussed, along with recommendations for best patient care and physician self-protection.
