- Abstract
The effect of two doses of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) on milk production (MP), blood glucose concentrations (GC) and days to first service (DFS) in health dual-purpose cows was determined. A total of 30 calving cows were random and assigned in three groups with 10 cows each one: Control (C); High dose group (HD; 7 g/24 hrs/Orally) and low dose group (LD; 5 g/24 hrs/Orally), for three consecutive days after calving. After parturition, the following variables were monitored: Rectal temperature (RT), body condition (CC) scale of 1-5); subclinical mastitis (SM), metritis (M), blood glucose concentrations (GC), DFS and MP. Statistical analysis was performed using the ANOVA model. The HD cows had higher MP (P<0.05), followed by the LD and C with lower production (8.2-0.45; 6.6-0.43 and 5.6-0.43 kg, respectively). LD cows had higher GC (P<0.05) than HD and C cows (37.94-2.65; 33.5-2.65 and 34.0-2.65 mg/dl, respectively). Also, LD cows lost less CC (P<0.05) than the others, and HD cows had less SM (P<0.05), followed by LD and C cows In contrast, RT, DFS and the number of cases of M, were similar (P=0.05). In conclusion, HD treatment with ASA improved MP and reduced the number of cases of SM, compared with LD and C, but did not reduce cows with M or DFS.
