- Abstract
That one learns by working is a statement that no one questions. With the educational expansion that began in the second half of the 20th century, we shifted our attention to formal education as a source of "Human Capital", relegating work experience as something that is subsequent and subordinate to schooling. Currently, there is a modest return to valuing work experience as a source of learning. This text analyzes the work of university students based on the results of two doctoral dissertations: one on undergraduate students at the Autonomous Metropolitan University Azcapotzalco and the other on the previous work experience of master's degree students at the University of Guadalajara, in both cases using a quantitative approach and the generation of typologies. Representative statistical data on the work of all Mexican university students are not available, but the two cases presented show how the learning processes of both undergraduate and master's degree students actually imply that most university students work while studying and/or have previously worked, configuring what we call a huge "Spontaneous Dual System".
