- Abstract
Machining operations are considered to be a critical and very important process in the automobile industry. Considering the turning operations in automobile industry for manufacturing of disc brakes, we studied the material composition and its effect on tool wear. The reduction in tool wear helps improve the productivity and quality of produced components. An automobile brake disc manufacturing process is considered in this work and the potential causes for rejection of the machined components are studied using failure modes effective analysis tool. The causes of failures were identified and the forces associated with it were established. The failure modes and effects analysis involves in studying the tool by running it under different conditions, until the tools fail for each condition and using the data associated with it. New composites with enhanced physical and mechanical properties were considered and they were analysed to obtain an optimal material that can enhance the tool life. The properties associated with tool wear were considered while choosing the ratio of mixture a combination of alloys for tool insert. The identified composites were subjected to simulative analysis to arrive at an optimal material combination of carbon, cobalt, molybdenum, chromium and tungsten to obtain a stronger and efficient tool insert.
