- Abstract
Oxidative and phosphorylating capacities of potato mitochondria were studied with an oxygen electrode; succinate was used as a respiratory substrate. When low concentrations (0·1 mg ml or less) of four detergents (Triton X-100, Tween 80, sodium cholate, and sodium deoxycholate) were added into the medium, the respiratory rates, respiratory controls, and ADP/O ratios of mitochondria were increased. At higher concentrations, Triton X-100 and sodium deoxycholate were sharp inhibitors of the mitochondrial respiration; sodium cholate and over all Tween 80 were much less toxic for potato mitochondria.
