- Abstract
This research examined the impact the Academic Progress Rating (APR) has had on NCAA Division I college football programs. The Director of Football Operations at NCAA Division I institutions were surveyed regarding how the APR has changed their program's recruiting and retention strategies. Results indicated the APR has caused programs to recruit more academically qualified prospects that have a decreased risk of becoming discipline problems. This may have resulted in improved graduation rates. However, football programs have also been forced to retain discipline problems on their rosters. Having a number of discipline problems on a team can negatively impact the programs ability to achieve athletic success. Keeping athletes with discipline problems becomes increasingly risky for coaches. The dilemma has become does the coach potentially lose their job as a result of keeping a player who is a discipline problem or do they possibly lose their job due to low APR scores.
