- Abstract
Cities was accepted as a fire, that spreads the light and warmness of the civilization to the dark and cold world by some. Cities are are the places where industry, trade and transportation are dominant instead of rural activities such as agriculture and livestock. Cities have completed infrastructures and properly structured places where artistic and cultural activities are carried out. The cities that emerged by industrialization attracted intense populations from the rural areas with their attractive aspects, and they increased both in number and in size. In the world while the urban population ratio was 30% in 1950, it was equal to the rural population ratio in 1994. It is estimated that the proportion of urban population, which was 54% in 2014, will reach 66% in 2050. The crowding of the cities and the transformation of the environment into concrete manholes caused the urban spaces to move away from naturalness. Environmental problems, such as squattering, traffic, noise and lack of greenspaces, have become disturbing the people living in cities. Cities are almost drowning the people who are social entities with these features. For this reason, people of the city have become obliged to natural and recreational activities. In Balıkesir, people also perform rural activities at different points of the city. People living in the city are engaged in vegetable production activities in empty spaces, building gardens, balconies and even terraces. Old parcels, tree bottoms, centered bins, even old tubs were used for this purpose. Hobby, contribution to family economy and obtaining organic products come to the forefront as the reason for the rural activities that are continued in urban areas. The gender structure of the people who are sustaining rural activities, and they were born in village or not, and the age status are noteworthy. In this study, socio-economic structures, sexes, and goals of individuals that are carrying rural activities in Balıkesir city center were tried to be revealed by quantitative method.
