- Abstract
Prosopography or collective biography is a legitimate substudy within historiography. Individual biographies, however, remain indispensable. In this article we focus on the activist Joseph Milot (1854-1934). As a Brussels 'ketje', shoemaker, coachman, manager of the information and propaganda resources of the Belgian Workers' Party (BWP/POB), Milot was involved in the ups and downs of the socialist movement in the late 19th-early 20th century. Through his story, we enter the Brussels socialist milieu which, together with Ghent, was one of the two major and original centres of Belgian socialism. The biographical approach also allows us to rediscover some more surprising events in this history. It also reveals the important role played by many activists who are little known today, if at all. This article is part of the broader editorial scheme of a biographical dictionary of the workers' movement in Belgium that aims to highlight the essential features and elements of the mass movement that is the workers' movement
