- Abstract
The article discusses the 20th century New Brunswick painter and teacher Julia Tilley Crawford's relationship with the social norms and rules associated with modern art. An overview of her paintings, including "The Quarry," "Snow and Mill from Gregory Place," "Barnesville," "North West Harbour, Deer Island," "Still Life" and "The Lily," is provided. The exhibitions of her paintings at art galleries, including in the salon of the French Society of Artists and in the Grand Central Art Gallery in New York City, New York, are discussed. An overview of the relationship between the National Gallery of Canada (NGC) in Ottawa, Ontario and Crawford is also provided.
