- Abstract
Background: Skin cancer has increased in recent years; among the main risk factors we can find the ultraviolet radiation and exposure to chemical agents such as arsenic, which is found naturally in surface and ground water in some parts of the state of Durango, Mexico. Objective: To determine the frequency of skin cancer in a histopathological diagnosis center of the city of Durango, Durango, Mexico. Material and method: A retrospective study was done in a histopathological diagnosis center in the city of Durango in a period comprised from 2010 to 2014; all the cases diagnosed as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma were included; sociodemographic characteristics of patients (age, sex, anatomic location and type of skin carcinoma) were incorporated. The cases were reassessed by two previously standardized examiners, the inter-examiner agreement (Kappa) was calculated. Results: The total number of cases diagnosed during that period was 10,618; of the total sample, 7% were positive for malignancy, and 1% corresponded to some type of skin malignancy. The mean age of the patients was 66.75 years (± 16.05), the most affected sex was the female with 52.5%; basal cell carcinoma was present in 65%, followed by squamous (25%) and melanoma with 10%. Conclusions: Knowing the frequency of this kind of malignancies will allow us to implement preventive programs where population could be aware of the importance of using protective barriers against solar radiation, register contact with water contaminated with arsenic, alerting health professionals of a probable under-diagnosis and of a possible increase in the number of cases in next years of these skin malignancies.
