- Abstract
In both the United States and Europe, iron deficiency is particularly frequent among younger children, women of child bearing age, and pregnant women. According to estimates provided by the World Health Organization, iron deficiency accounts for roughly half of the 1.62 billion instances of anemia that have been recorded globally. In Romania, approximately 40 % of children under 1 year old are suffering from iron deficiency anemia. Iron deficiency often occurs in phases that advance from storage iron depletion (decline in serum ferritin concentrations and low levels of iron in the bone marrow) to iron-deficient erythropoiesis (iron stores are depleted, iron supply to erythropoietin cells and transfer in saturation decline, but hemoglobin levels are typically within the normal range) and lastly, toiron deficiency anemia, associated with a decrease in hematocrit and hemoglobin levels. Iron deficiency in children is associated with impaired cognitive function, immune function, exercise/work productivity, and regulation of body temperature. Other functional deficits include gastrointestinal disturbances, weakness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, psychomotor and cognitive impairments in infants and children. Maintaining an appropriate level of iron throughout pregnancy has several objectives, including lowering the risk of maternal morbidity, improving the health of the fetus, and providing the infant with sufficient nutritional reserves for the early stages of their life after birth. Conclusion: People from the United States and Europe suffer from iron deficiency, particularly youngsters, women who are menstruating, and pregnant women. Counseling individuals and families about healthy iron nutrition during infancy and beyond, including about iron supplementation during pregnancy, screening individuals based on their risk for iron deficiency, and treating and following up individuals with presumptive iron deficiency are all effective ways to prevent and control iron deficiency. This may assist to lessen the symptoms of iron deficiency, which will ultimately lead to improvements in public health.
