- Abstract
A study on design characteristics of four seam locally known 'GhanSapat', trawl operated from Ratnagiri, Maharashtra showed that, net is popularly used for catching fish as well as shrimp. Five belly sections net had overall length of 27.04 to 29.76 m while average overall length for six belly section net observed was 30.86 m. Wings were triangular in shape had mesh size varied between 40 and 60 mm. Upper wing panel was larger than lower panel. Mesh sizes recorded for overhang section were almost same as that of wing section. In general, the dimensions such as breadth, number of meshes along breadth and mesh size were decreasing from first to last belly section, but average number of meshes per meter was increasing from first to last belly. Mesh sizes for belly section ranged from 50 to 20 mm for upper panel and 35 to 20 mm for lower panel of GhanSapat. Bolsh rope with 4 to 5 mm thickness was used only in wing sections. Length of head rope and foot rope varied from 18 to 22 m and 20 to 26 m respectively. The diameter of head and foot rope used was 10 to12 mm. Bolsh, head and foot rope were made up of high density polyethylene (HDPE). Blue coloured multifilament twine with 0.67 mm thickness was used for construction of webbing.
