- Abstract
Introduction: External ventricular drainage is a temporary solution in the case of acute hydrocephalus. The aim of the study is to present the most important nursing tasks necessary in the care of a patient with external ventricular drainage. Material and methods: The method of an individual case study was used in the work. The case of a 49-year-old female patient is presented, who was diagnosed with an aneurysm of the right internal carotid artery subjected to embolization of the aneurysm and assuming external ventricular drainage. Results: Throughout the period of maintaining ventricular drainage, the patient required continuous monitoring of vital signs, water balance, monitoring of drainage, and draining cerebrospinal fluid. Despite the lack of a neurological deficit, she required assistance in all everyday activities. Conclusions: The nursing team for a patient with external ventricular drainage performs several specialized tasks: therapeutic, caring, preventive.
