- Abstract
There are currently four published studies looking into helmet use of adolescents. However, these are all based in Toronto, Canada. A prior meta-analysis has noted that there is variation by geographical region among the young adult population, and hence adolescents in other regions may similarly use helmets at a different frequency. The aim of this study was to look into helmet use of adolescents in Ottawa, Canada. A questionnaire was circulated to Grade 7 and 8 students at Ashbury College, an independent co-educational day school in Ottawa, Canada. The primary objectives of the survey were to determine (1) the percentage of cyclists at the school and (2) the percentage of cyclists who wear a helmet. The proportion of individuals who frequently use a helmet and proportion of individuals who are aware are approximately equal. However, this is a correlation and not necessarily a causation. The helmet use rate for school commuters, 76%, is slightly lower than the rates noted in prior studies. It is comforting to note that the majority of student cyclists do not regularly commute to school, so the low helmet-use rate may simply be a phenomenon of lack of regular commute. Educational and encouragement programs could still be employed to hopefully raise this lower rate.
