- Abstract
The purpose of the study was to screen out alfalfa varieties suitable for planting in arid and semi-arid areas. Five alfalfa varieties were selected as experimental materials and treated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) to simulate drought stress (10%, 15%, and 20%). The germination rate, germination index, simplified vigor index, and drought resistance index of alfalfa seeds were measured, and the drought resistance of the tested alfalfa materials was evaluated by membership function. The results showed that the germination rate, germination index, simplified vigor index, and drought resistance index of alfalfa seeds decreased with the aggravation of PEG stress. Under severe (20% PEG) stress, the germination rate, germination index, and drought resistance index of Longmu 801 were the highest, and significantly higher than those of other varieties (P<0.05). The germination rate, germination index, and drought resistance index of Sitel and Sardi were significantly lower than those of other varieties (P<0.05). The ranking of drought resistance of five alfalfa materials was: Longmu 801 > Caoyuan No.3 > WL168HQ > Sitel > Sardi. The study indicates that Longmu 801 and Caoyuan No.3 have strong drought resistance and were suitable for planting in arid and semi-arid areas.
