- Abstract
The purpose of this study aims to investigate agricultural by-products in Luye and Guanshan areas in Taitung County, as a reference for the available feed resources of beef cattle. The primary data of 150 kinds of agricultural by-products in the two regions were obtained from Public AgriData Exchange, and five by-products (sweet potato, sugar cane, corn, pineapple, and rice) which are easily available to beef cattle farmers and reported harmless at a specific feeding proportion confirmed by animal experiments were screened out. The samples taken were used to conduct chemical composition analysis and by-product yield estimation. The results showed that the annual by-product output (kg) in this region was the highest in rice. Chemical composition analysis results showed that the sweet potato vine contains the highest amount of crude protein (16.07%), crude fat (3.83%), ash (16.44%), and digestible protein (9.22%). Pineapple peel has the highest content of nitrogen-free extracts (81.96%). Rice straw has the highest content of crude fiber (34.04%), acid detergent fiber (41.07%), and neutral detergent fiber (64.07%). In conclusion, rice straw can be used with sweet potato vines or pineapple peel for beef cattle fattening. Nevertheless, the diet needs to be balanced, so the proper by-product ratio in the feed would be defined based on feeding experiments afterwards.
