- Abstract
The Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is an eye degenerative disease that affects the macula and commits the central vision, is one of the main causes of blindness in the elderly population worldwide. The number of elderly people in the world is increasing and this increases the prevalence of visual impairment in ARMD, making it a health public problem. It is known that the ARMD is multifactorial and is related to several risk factors, and several of them are modifiable, which, every day, become the therapeutic target for the treatment of ARMD. The need for effective treatment to prevent the progression of atrophic ARMD is fundamental every year because it is estimated that the prevalence of this disease will double in the coming decades.. The best strategy to deal with the ARMD remains the prophylaxis, based on changes in life habits, control of hypertension and smoking cessation.
