Optimal handling and criteria for melanoma diagnosis.

- Abstract
We have no absolute rules to use: judgement and opinion continue to play a large part in the diagnostic process. We attempt to classify lesions into categories of low, intermediate or high risk of malignant behaviour. The differential diagnosis of melanocytic lesions is not always straightforward, especially at the boundaries between these three categories. We have no individual criteria that discriminate benign from malignant, but we do have a small number of studies that suggest that there are ways in which the shades of grey can be characterized between the benign naevus and the unequivocally malignant melanoma with dismal prognosis.
