The Effect of Fear Appeals on George Whitefield's Auditors.
- Authors
MELTON JR., FRANKIE J.
- Abstract
This article assesses the effectiveness of argumentum ad baculum used by preacher George Whitefield on his listeners. The author mentions that Whitefield viewed argumentum ad baculum, an appeal to fear, as a way that could bring listeners to repentance and faith. Three methods are offered to evaluate the effectiveness of fear appeal on an audience including self-reports and participant observation. The impact on hearers of Whitefield's preaching like crying and fainting is also discussed.
