- Abstract
The aim of this article is to propose how to represent the stress of Brazilian Portuguese (BP) non-verbs in the multidimensional metrical plane, regarding the fact that in BP there are two stress patterns: regular and irregular. Different approaches have treated these patterns from the point of view of the standard metrical phonology so that the resource of extrametricality has been used to account for the irregular pattern. Our proposal is that in the multidimensional metrical plane, within the Optimality Theory (OT) framework (MCCARTHY; PRINCE, 1993, 1995; HYDE 2001), no reference to extrametricality needs to be made or, in the OT terms, Nonfinality. According to our analyses this resource is a by-product of the constraint hierarchy.
