- Abstract
The problem of critical periods or stages of embryogenesis of flowering plants is elaborated in detail from the standpoint of a systematic approach to the differentiation of the embryo, taking into account the importance of morphogenetic and morphophysiological correlations for the development of embryonic structures and surrounding tissues of the seed and fruit (see publications by T.B. Batygina and V.E. Vasilyeva, 1983–2014). The critical stages of cereal embryogenesis are of particular interest since the embryos of representatives of Poaceae family are distinguished among other monocotyledonous plant embryos by the unique Graminad- (Poad) type of embryogenesis and the formation of very specific organs (T.B. Batygina, 1968–2014). The article presents a review of the literature and the author's own data on the periodization of the multistage embryogenesis on the example of cereals. Disputable issues concerning both the criteria for revealing the critical stages of embryogenesis and the features of the critical stages were analyzed. The prospects of studying the stages of embryogenesis of cereals, as well as the use of embryos at critical stages of development in biotechnological and breeding research, were discussed.
