- Abstract
This project aims to demonstrate both epidemiological and sociodemographic profiles of the patients guided to the Santa Monica Laboratory, using a transversal and descriptive study method. The sample was held by 3705 patients that were divided between the seasons of winter and summer. Hypovitaminosis D is a deficiency related to nutricional and enviromental factors, because in order for the skin to synthethize Vitamin D, ultraviolet rays are necessary. Therefore, the lack of sun exposure and consumption of animal source foods, for example fish, are risk factors for the development of Vitamin D Deficiency. Hypovitaminosis D is also related to other diseases like Osteomalacia, Osteoporosis ,Rickets in children and extraskeletal diseases. Using the chi-square test is was possible to determine that in the sample analyzed there was no association between the serum concentration of Vitamin D with gender nor season of the year. However, the test confirmed a relation among Hypovitaminosis D and age. Another important result from this test is the fact that the younger patients, people within 15 and 19 years old, had a low concentration of vitamin D in their blood. This result can be associated with the lifestyle of people among these ages.
