- Abstract
This article explores the limitations and flaws of using the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) as a measure of research quality. Despite the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) discouraging its use, the JIF continues to be widely used and may influence promotion and funding decisions. The article suggests considering alternative measures, such as individual author indexes and other journal metrics like the Eigenfactor Score and CiteScore. It also discusses the opaque process of journal selection for inclusion in databases and potential biases in JIF calculations. The article provides an overview of various metrics and resources for evaluating scholarly articles, highlighting their limitations and biases. It concludes by calling for further discussions on the responsible use of these metrics in research assessment and promotion decisions.
