- Abstract
Due to the general aging of the population and a substantial progress in the treatment of cancer, the amount of cancer survivors in the Netherlands is expected to increase to 666.000 patiënts in 2020. Cancer and its treatment is often associated with long-term physical and psychosocial side effects. In 2011 the Dutch Guidelines of Cancer Rehabilitation were developed, in which a multidisciplinary treatment of cancer patiënts is described. An important part of the rehabilitation program is physical exercise. Exercise leads to increased muscle strength and endurance, a decrease in cancer-related fatigue, a better quality of life and potentially an increased return to work or social activities. However, little is known about the most effective type, intensity, frequency and length of training. In addition, studies on nutritional interventions to promote training adaptation in cancer patiënts are entirely lacking. Future research is needed to optimise the current cancer rehabilitation programmes, and to implement these in the Dutch health care system.
