- Abstract
The article provides an update on the use of methylprednisolone intravenous pulse therapy for pediatric patients with post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans (PIBO). PIBO is a rare form of chronic obstructive lung disease that occurs after a lower respiratory tract infection. The use of corticosteroids is the most common anti-inflammatory therapy for PIBO, but there have been no controlled trials to prove its efficacy and safety. The study describes the experience of treating PIBO patients with monthly intravenous high-dose methylprednisolone pulse therapy cycles between 2007 and 2019. The results showed significant clinical improvement, including fewer wheezing exacerbations and hospitalizations, improved oxygen saturation, and improved growth. The authors conclude that methylprednisolone pulse therapy may be an effective and safe strategy for PIBO but should be used for shorter periods of time than previously recommended.
