- Abstract
The article presents a study on the epidemiology of adult patients who were hospitalized with pneumonia or influenza in a sentinel network in Australia. The researchers performed detailed data collection on patients admitted to hospitals with community-acquired pneumonia or laboratory-confirmed influenza. They recruited patients through active surveillance of radiology results, infection control and emergency departments. They found that sentinel surveillance systems can offer timely and reliable information on influenza during a pandemic season.
