- Abstract
This article discusses the importance of C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in diagnosing infections in newborns and neonates. The mother's immune system is compromised during pregnancy, increasing the risk of infection for both the mother and child. Immunological markers like CRP can help diagnose infections early, reducing the risk of complications and transmission from mother to child during delivery. While a study found no significant changes in maternal CRP levels between women with normal labor and those with premature rupture of membranes (PROM), other studies have shown the importance of CRP and other investigation results in detecting neonatal infection. Constant monitoring of CRP levels in newborns and neonates is crucial, as elevated levels indicate infection. Assessing and monitoring CRP levels, along with other factors like IL-6 and white blood cell count, can help prevent severe infections in newborns and neonates.
