- Abstract
Aim: the aim of the present study was to assess whether the width and position of root proximity (RP) influence the interdental spare dimensions in periodontitis and non-periodontitis patients. Material and methods: Using digitized radiographs, 789 interdental spaces from 250 periodontitis and 80 non-periodontitis patients were assessed to measure the distances between: adjacent teeth at cemento-enamel junction ([D-CEJ), apex (ID-apex), alveolar crest ([RD) and closest proximity level (width RP), the base of the tooth contact point and the alveolar crest level (CP- AC). Results: ID-CEJ distance was positively correlated with RP width and position, both in non-periodontitis and periodontitis patients. For both groups, IRD distance was correlated positively with the width and negatively with the position of RP. CP-AC distance was correlated positively with RP position in both groups and negatively with RP width in periodontitis patients. Conclusion: The RP width and position were correlated with the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the interdental space, which indicates that RP might influence the interdental space morphology.
