Opinion. Presents experimental data supporting the critical role of capsaicin-sensitive primary afferent fibers in the initiation and maintenance of pathological pain. Capsaicin-induced, centrally-evoked cutaneous hyperalgesia and neuroplastic changes; Occurrence of morphological changes after peripheral nerve damage.
