- Abstract
The health-related vulnerabilities of immigrant children are numerous, but information related to their needs is limited, especially in new immigrant destination states like Utah. In order to examine these vulnerabilities, this study incorporates responses from a variety of social service agencies that offer a broad range of health services for immigrant and refugee populations. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with sixteen respondents (N = 16) to elaborate on the health-related vulnerabilities of immigrant children and the specific practices that have been developed to address them. The respondents identified gaps in the medical system faced by immigrant children and outlined general health-related trends faced by the group as a whole. These social service providers were also familiar with a wide range of strategies that have been employed in an effort to "break the cycle" of vulnerabilities faced by immigrant children in Utah. The respondents specifically noted that the vulnerabilities to which the children of unauthorized immigrant children are exposed are fundamentally different than those faced by refugee children. This difference highlights the need for unique solutions for each group of children.
