- Abstract
The study of bioclastic accumulations has increased in the last few years, because these accumulations are important source of sedimentary, taphonomic and paleoenvironmental information. However, the recognition of features associated with meteoric alteration in bioclastic accumulations is still poorly understood. The aim of this study is to integrate the sedimentary, taxonomic and taphonomic analysis to understand the role of meteoric alteration on the mollusc shell deposits of two Holocene age sites located at the coast of Rio de Janeiro State. The bioclastic bed of Reserva Tauá is constituted of matrix of mud, densely/loosely packed and 54% of shells with concave-down orientation. The Marina búzios deposits is composed of matrix of sand, densely packed and 65% of shells with concaveup orientation. The taphonomic signatures of both deposits have weak physical and chemical alterations. However, Reserva Tauá has an exposed horizon with high microboring in the shells. Despite the biostabilization processes have been occurring for hundreds of years at Reserva Tauá, the evolution of pedogenetic process is hindered by the the proximity to the water table.
