- Title
Tracking Down a Cause for Hypospadias.
- Authors
Spivey, Angela
- Abstract
The article examines what causes hypospadias, a birth defect in males where the urethra's opening is located on the underside of the penis. While the cause is typically unknown, some studies indicate that lowered levels of the placental hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) contribute to the condition. Other studies attributed hypospadias and other conditions, including premature birth, low birth weight, and preeclampsia, to a malfunction of the placenta. A joint study conducted by Denmark and Sweden determined that increased risk of hypospadias resulted from an impaired placental production of hormones.
