- Abstract
This study presents the results of an experiment that improves the solar energy collection efficiency of a static refractive-reflective solar concentrator. For this, a solar concentrator with a reported efficiency of 69.36% was considered, which combines a prism and a metallic conical concentrator. The new version of the solar concentrator was built on a conventional lathe using 1018 steel that has low carbon content (0.15% to 0.20%) in the alloy, which was applied a sanding and polishing process to achieve a mirror-like finish. A light intensity measurement system was used based on an open source Arduino Uno R3 microcontroller, supported by the ATmega328P circuit, a photodiode and a halogen spotlight with height position adjustment and horizontal displacement. The efficiency achieved was 73.39%, which exceeds the results already reported. This work offers an innovative and efficient solution that increases the collection time of solar energy. In addition, it provides another alternative that uses different materials than those reported previously, such as anodized aluminum sheet, with highly reflective surfaces. The solar concentrator developed in this study can be adapted to more complex solar concentration systems. The significant improvement in solar energy collection efficiency is due to the rigidity and stability of the materials used and the finishing processes applied. An advantage is its potential application in industrial and commercial environments based on renewable energy.
