- Abstract
Exercise is linked to beneficial effects on health, people who attend the gym generally do so in a planned manner and with health or aesthetic goals; however, they use the Body Mass Index (BMI), to measure their progress. Dissatisfaction with body image can lead the population to use exercise as a compensatory behavior to reduce weight, leading to a risk of eating disorders (ED). For this project cross-sectional research was conducted, with the participation of 219 gym attendees, with tests for the analysis of categories such as chi-square and Fisher's exact test, and for continuous variables the comparison of groups was performed with the Mann Whitney test. The objective was to identify the relationship between exercise, BMI, and the risk of eating disorders in attendees to the gymnasium of the Sinú University. A statistically significant difference was observed between gender and level of physical activity (p=0.012). There was no relationship between the level of physical activity and the risk of eating disorders (p=0.896), nor between BMI and the risk of eating disorders (p=0.399) in university students. It is concluded that there is no relationship between exercise, BMI, and risk of eating disorders in gym attendees.
