- Title
Rat Poison is Threatening Carnivores Around the World.
- Authors
Keating, Meghan P.
- Abstract
The article discusses the threat that rat poison poses to carnivores around the world. Rat poison, specifically anticoagulant rodenticides, is commonly used to control rat populations but can harm other animals that consume the poisoned rodents. Studies have found that many wild mammal carnivores, including bobcats, foxes, and weasels, have been exposed to these poisons, with one-third of deceased animals directly linked to the poisons. The movement of these poisons up the food chain, known as bioaccumulation, can have detrimental effects on larger carnivores. The use of rat poison is largely unregulated and may be contributing to declines in carnivore species globally. The article emphasizes the need for better control methods and regulation to reduce the use of anticoagulant rodenticides.
