- Abstract
A study published in Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica in October 2024 examined the use of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in the maintenance phase of psychotic unipolar depression. The study analyzed data from Swedish national registries and compared patients who received subsequent maintenance-ECT (M-ECT) within 14 days after discharge with those who did not. While the results tended to favor the M-ECT group, they were not statistically significant overall. However, among patients older than 65 years, M-ECT was significantly associated with a decreased risk of relapse. The study highlights the potential benefits of M-ECT but also acknowledges limitations, such as the lack of a clear distinction between continuation ECT (C-ECT) and M-ECT and the relatively small sample size of the M-ECT group. Future research should address these limitations and consider individualized treatment schedules and long-term cognitive and quality-of-life impacts.
